Prima Facie Raises Critical Questions for Society

A New Chapter of Social Change Is Beginning : Attorney General Bhandari

Kathmandu, 9th March : The internationally acclaimed play Prima Facie, written by Suzie Miller, offers a powerful reflection on truth, justice, and professional ethics. One of the play’s most notable lines states, “What you believe may not necessarily be the truth.” This idea allows the drama to explore complex social realities, ethical dilemmas in the legal profession, and the gap between public narratives and hidden truths.

Currently being staged at Kaushi Theatre, Prima Facie draws attention for raising important social questions and encouraging deeper public dialogue. The production portrays the professional world of legal practitioners, the injustices faced by individuals, and the struggles within systems meant to deliver justice.

The Nepali adaptation is directed by Akanksha Karki, translated by Durga Karki, and features actor Pashupati Rai. The performance includes emotionally powerful scenes that engage audiences with sensitive social issues.

During a recent visit to Kaushi Theatre, Sabita Bhandari attended the play and shared her thoughts. She said that the drama raises timely and relevant issues around crime investigation, gender discrimination, societal attitudes, and broader views on justice.

“Through this play, many questions come up regarding the courts, government attorneys, police investigations, male attitudes, and our social psychology,” she stated. “It remains unclear when or how all these questions will be answered.”

Attorney General Bhandari further noted that her visits to various districts across Nepal have revealed numerous cases of social discrimination and violence. She stressed that real change can only happen when societal mindsets start to shift.

“There is still much work to be done,” she pointed out. “A new chapter of social change is beginning. Gradually, we must create a society based on justice and equality, and we must remain committed to that goal.”

Actor Pashupati Rai also mentioned that the main purpose of the play is to raise awareness about different forms of discrimination and to inspire meaningful discussions that can lead to social change and the development of it.
